Tempe set for new era of transportation

By Mayor Hugh Hallman

After decades of visioning and planning, we are almost there. Our light rail line, and its opening celebration this December will help strengthen our economy, sustain our environment, and offer cultural connections that reach across boundaries. We are witnessing the results of the very best efforts of citizens, government and the business community.
In December, we will mark the opening of light rail, but really we will be celebrating our success at efforts building an integrated public transportation system. We began this journey decades ago by including bike paths, walking trails and other intra-city connections throughout our community. These features have allowed our residents to get from home to community amenities without getting into a car. We have added a ubiquitous bus system that provides the means to travel longer distances, primarily for the commute to work.

Hackett House reopens for fall

Tempe’s first bakery, built in 1888, is today the center of the many activities of the Tempe Sister City volunteers. Now known as Hackett House, named for early residents of the old bakery, it will reopen for its 23rd season on Monday, Sept. 18.
There is a gift shop, an international program for children entitled “Passport to the World,” cooking classes for adults and children, and the ever-popular tea parties. Tempe’s sixth grade students are invited to participate in special field trips, which begin in January.

Mentoring program for girls in Tempe

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley and The Girls’ Education Project have entered into a community partnership intended to enhance the offerings of both organizations to the benefit of girls and young women in the East Valley.

“Girls need mentors and role models who will expose them to new information, ideas, networks of persons, funding for study and/or for business startups, and all kinds of other resources, if they are to be successful as adults and if they are to become contributing citizens,” said Shirley Osborne, Executive Director of The Girls’ Education Project.
