SPOTLIGHT ON: Cassanos awarded 'Spirit of Tempe'
Don and Bobbie Cassano were presented with the Tempe Chamber’s Spirit of Tempe Award in February during the 11th Annual Breakfast for Chamber Champions.
The Spirit of Tempe award recognizes lifetime achievements of service, dedication and contribution to the community, and honors hard work and strong commitment to improving the quality of life in Tempe. The Cassanos have lived in Tempe for more than 30 years, during which time they have established a tremendous record of public service to the community.

“Don and Bobbie are admirable examples of the type of people who enrich the lives of those in their community and who make Tempe an extraordinary city in which to live,” said Mary Ann Miller, president/CEO of the Tempe Chamber. “The impact that they have had on our community through their service and involvement is immeasurable. It is our pleasure and honor to present them with this prestigious award.”

Don Cassano has led the Board of Directors of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce twice, served on the Tempe City Council for nearly 10 years, including as vice mayor. He also has served as president of the Arizona Clean and Beautiful Advisory Board, president of the Friendship Village of Tempe’s Board of Directors, president of the Tempe Nuevo Kiwanis Club and chairman of the Valley Business Council and Valley Forward Association.

Don has received the Tempe Community Council Don Carlos Humanitarian Award, the National Solid Waste Association Special Governor’s Award, the Tempe South Rotary Howard Pyle Vocational Service Award and the WMX Technologies President’s Community Service Award, among others.

Bobbie Cassano also led the Tempe Chamber Board, and is actively and deeply involved with the educational community. She has been president and an ongoing active member of the Tempe/Kyrene Communities in Schools, an organization that she helped found in 1996. Bobbie is also a Partnership Specialist with the Scottsdale Unified School District and a Business Partnership/volunteer supervisor with the Tempe Elementary School District. She has been president of Tempe Leadership, president of the Tempe Governors and has served on the Tempe Community Council Board of Directors, The Tempe Connections Advisory Council, The Tempe Citizen Corps Council and the American Cancer Society in a variety of capacities.

Among the many special recognitions that Bobbie has received are the Tempe Community Council Don Carlos Humanitarian Service Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Excellence in Community Service Award, the Tempe Chamber of Commerce’s Business Woman of the Year Award, the Tempe St. Luke’s Woman of Distinction and the Outstanding Tempe Community Leadership Award.
