| Neighborhood group adds ‘Musical Scales’ |
|
Board members from the Riverside-Sunset Neighborhood Association recently were in search of a project that would bring their community together in a common cause while simultaneously helping some disadvantaged children from Tempe.
The group seemed to hit the right note with its new projected, dubbed “Musical Scales.” The board hopes to get its own members involved—as well as the Tempe community at large—in seeking out donations to help purchase new or gently used musical instruments for students at the nearby Scales Elementary School at 1045 S. Beck Ave. The cash also will be used to create a regular maintenance fund for the instruments. For those who are feeling the affects of a struggling economy, and would like to help but just don’t have the cash to spare—a search of the closet or attic may be in order. Perhaps an old, dusty but still working violin, trumpet, or clarinet might be found lurking in a forgotten corner, longing to be played one more time by an eager child. “It’s a good thing to do for these kids; music is an important thing in a child’s life,” said Riverside-Sunset Co-Chair Bill Butler. The Riverside-Sunset neighborhood runs from University north to Rio Salado Parkway, and from the railroad tracks west to Priest Drive. Tax receipts can be provided for most donations.
