By Dr. David Mendelson It is that time of year again when the sun in Arizona becomes increasingly intense. The long, hot days of summer have hit the Valley. Here are some simple ABCs of sun awareness. A—Away. Stay away from the sun especially during peak hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. B—Block. Start a sunscreen smear campaign to provide protection by using sunscreen or sun block with SPF of 15 or more. Use liberally and often. C—Check up. Any suspicious skin growth on the head, face, neck or exposed body part should be checked by a physician.
Do you know that more than 700,000 skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States? More than 30,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Arizona experiences a higher rate of skin cancer cases that the rest of the country because of our climate and active outdoor lifestyle. And the best news is that 90 percent of skin cancers are preventable. In fact, melanoma is almost always curable in the early stages, but it can spread to other parts of the body. Follow these simple ABCs and your risk of getting skin cancer may be reduced. If you have any concerns about growths, get them checked immediately. Early detection is the best defense against this deadly disease. It is important to check your own skin about once a month. You should know the pattern of moles, freckles, and other marks on your skin so that you'll notice any changes. Spots on the skin that change in size, shape, or color should be seen by a doctor right away. Any unusual sore, lump, blemish, marking, or change in the way an area of the skin looks or feels may be a sign of skin cancer. You might want to consider an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for skin and other cancers of the head and neck region. There are many facets to cancer diagnosis and treatment. Cancers destroy tissues. There may be extensive damage to underlying tissues that require some reconstructive work. Using a professional who specializes in, and understands the delicacies of how that damage could affect you may enhance your recovery. Appearances are important to all of us.
