Thirsty Dog opens on Mill Avenue

The newest concept in fast, upscale drinks and sausages to go launched on Aug. 13, when The Thirsty Dog 2 Go opened in the shadow of the downtown Tempe Post Office.

“The Thirsty Dog 2 Go caters to folks on the move who want fast eats and really ice cold beverages,” said Gil Schmitt, owner and operator. “We’re also offering souvenirs, greeting cards, gifts, bagged candies, food snack items, cigarettes, and even stamps. We also sell sundries like aspirin, toothpaste, and razors.”

A unique feature is The Thirsty Dog 2 Go’s ice trough with super-cold beverages. No ordinary hot dogs here: only the best sausages including Hebrew National, Skinny and Fat Dogs, Vienna Beef, Four Peak’s Kilt-Lifter-soaked beer brats, a jalapeno brat, Sicilian sausage, spicy sausage, and Italian sausage.

A beer and wine cooler also stocks juices and milks to go. Air pots of flavored coffees, coffee slushes, flavored slushes, iced coffees, and other Java Classics gourmet coffee also are available.

A veteran Mill Avenue District entrepreneur, Gil Schmitt also owns Cold Stone Creamery on Mill, and for 22 years owned Arizona Shorts also on Mill. “From my long-time involvement in the Mill Avenue District, I identified the need for a quick-serve party store for the walking traffic on Mill Avenue. We want to offer quality items at reasonable prices, and provide a range of sundry items not otherwise available. My concept closely aligns with one of the needs identified as missing in the retail mix of the Mill Avenue District,” said Schmitt.
