Local youth designs PCH holiday card Phoenix Children’s Hospital has kicked off the season with the premiere of the 2008 holiday cards that went on sale Nov. 1. Cancer kids’ have personally designed these cards making for an easy decision for families and friends to choose their holiday card of choice for the season. Among them is Tempe resident Adriana Ruiz, 15.
Tempe teen Adriana Ruiz had her “Christmas Bunnies” drawing (inset) selected as one of the designs for Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s annual holiday boxes of cards (photos courtesy of Phoenix Children’s Hospital). Late last year Ruiz was diagnosed with cancer of the sinuses. Since that time, she’s had five surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Today she is in remission. Ruiz likes sushi, biking, photography, and just hanging out with her friends. She admits she wasn’t frightened while battling cancer and says it was more like an “inconvenience.” She didn’t like missing school and her friends. In fact, her parents say she was so stoic they weren’t sure if she understood the seriousness of it. She did. She’s just tough. Ruiz now looks up to other cancer survivors, and is grateful that she got to know other kids at Phoenix Children’s who were battling the same disease. The holiday card designs for the 2008 Art Project will support the Hospital’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Retail packages are $10 for 15 cards and are available at Valley Bashas’, Food City & AJ stores, or online at www.phoenixchildrensartproject.com.
